The New Couch

Megan and I had been putting off getting a couch for our new apartment since we moved in last May. We didn’t want to get a really crappy used one but we didn’t want to spend a lot on a new one either seeing that we may be moving in a few months.

About a week before Christmas, Megan and her mom were out looking around thrift and resale stores, and found a really nice used couch [the couch]. Her mom bought it for her as her Christmas gift.

Before we had the couch I had used the corner that it now occupies to store the boxes of random crap I had from our old place. Before we brought the couch home I had to make room for it by moving the stuff. I got rid of some of it but I just moved most of it off to the side.

Then on Christmas Megan’s brother gave her a really nice coffee table and two end table set. Now, because I need to make more room for new stuff I’m forced to actually deal with the boxes of crap. Tonight I finally sorted through most of them and brought a couple to the storage room down the hall.

Tomorrow I should be able to get rid of most of the rest so we can go get the table set from Megan’s mom’s house. Our apartment is actually starting to feel like home now that we’re half-way through the lease.

Shut Up

Megan and I have decided that we no longer need to talk to each other since we’re thinking the same damned thing anyway. It’s kind of scary actually…

Great Gift

I forgot how great a sweater can be when you wake up late and don’t have an ironed shirt. Luckily, it doesn’t get too warm at work so no one can see how wrinkly my shirt really is.

Nice Management

One of the nice things about living in an apartment that has mostly old people as residents is that the management really stays on top of the snow removal. It’s one in the morning and the guys are plowing and salting the sidewalks.

Back Home

I decided to come home tonight rather than in the morning and man, was that a mistake. It took me around an hour and a half to get there on Thursday, but because of lots of snow and crappy drivers it took me three and a half hours to get home.

It was nice being away from any responsibility for a few days. The only thing I did was play all of chapter two of Neverwinter Nights and keep the fire going.

Home Alone

Last year Megan’s mom started somewhat of a holiday tradition by renting a cottage on Atwood Lake, which is near New Philadelphia, OH. Megan, her mother, two brothers and I all celebrated last Thanksgiving and this Easter there. They are there again this week. Megan went there with her brother last night but I’m still at home because I’m working tomorrow.

It was pretty strange coming home from work today to an empty place. It’s nice and peaceful but also eerily quiet. Without Megan here I notice every time the refrigerator compressor starts and I can hear the tiny clicks of the metal around our heaters expanding when they turn on. I like this kind of solitude in small doses but I don’t think I’d much enjoy living alone.

I used this time as an opportunity to reformat her computer and play some Neverwinter Nights uninterrupted.

I’ll probably do more of the same tomorrow night and then head down there Thursday morning.

Misplaced Voice

I went to the Cleveland Browns game yesterday. It started out really well but the end result wasn’t what I had hoped for.

I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, but I must have been screaming a lot during the game. When I came home, my voice was a little raspy and dry.

When I woke up this morning, I realized that I’d completely lost my voice. I called my boss to let him know that he had to cancel the training I was scheduled to do today. My voicemail message sounded so bad that I had to e-mail him the details.

The upside is that I’m not answering the phone at work today.

Too Dark

There’s something slightly depressing about leaving work every day when it’s already dark outside.

T-Shirts dot com

Looking through my freshly folded clothes reveals that more than half of my t-shirts are from the dot com freebie days. All of the following shirts were acquired in the fall of ‘99:

Cisco (2)
3Com (3)
Compaq
IBM
Intraware
Jamcracker
Intraware (2)
WRQ
Bolt
X.com

Interestingly, all of the companies are still around except my former favorite bank, X.com

Loads of Loads of Laundry

Back in May, Megan and I wound up having to move out of our old apartment earlier than expected (due to landlord / lease issues). In an effort to pack quickly, I just shoved all of my fall and winter clothes into black garbage bags, figuring that I’d deal with them after we got settled into our new place. It’s now getting cold and I really need some of those clothes.

This morning, I dumped out four 42 gallon contractor bags full of clothes onto the living room floor. I spent the next hour and a half sorting the clothes by color and if I’ll ever wear them again. I ended up with ten loads of laundry. I had no idea that I had this much clothing.

I spent the next hours carrying baskets of clothes down from the sixth floor to the third floor, where the laundry rooms are, switching and folding clothes. I took a break to watch the Browns game and then started up again. I switched the remainder of the laundry so that it would finish drying at 11:00 and 11:30. I went back down at about 11:05 and started folding. Two hours later I’m finally finished.

The neat part is that I’ve found so many pieces of clothing that I’d forgotten I owned. It’s almost like going on a big shopping spree. The depressing part is that I just spent an entire day and $27.50 on laundry.

NPR & NFL

I am sitting here following my usual Sunday morning ritual: working on a computer program, listening to This American Life and watching ESPN NFL Countdown on mute. I imagine I’ve got to be in the minority.
