In the little spare time I’ve had, I’ve been preparing to move tylerdave.com to the new dedicated server that I share with TB and Warren. All of the major stuff is done so I should be switching in the next couple days.

At work I was offered to be trained as a bertender so now I’ll be a bartender as well as a server which I think is pretty cool. I’m still looking around for other work but for now at least I’m having fun and making enough money that I can hold out for a job I’ll actually like.

Megan’s father died suddenly of a heart attack late Sunday night. Megan found out early Monday morning. She searched online a flight for that afternoon from Baltimore to Cleveland, and left for the airport almost immediately. I had to work on Monday and Tuesday morning, but I was able to find people to cover my shifts for the rest of the week. I drove to Cleveland and got in around 4:45am on Wednesday. There were viewings today and the funeral services will be in the morning on Thursday.

I didn’t get a chance to know him as well as I would have liked, but I’m glad I talked with him as much as I did. He was very proud of all of his children and more than anything else, he wanted them to be doing things that made them happy. I’d like to think that some of his outlook on life rubbed off on me.

Please take this opportunity to tell the people you care about that you love them. Kerry Patrick Kimbrell, you will be missed.

About ten minutes after all this, I got a call from Chili’s asking if I could start my training today. So I’ll finally be working for the first time in six weeks, and I’m actually looking forward to it.

On Monday, TB bought a deep fryer. My life will never be the same.

After purchasing the fryer itself, we went to the grocery store and picked up a gallon of oil and a bunch of items to fry. That night we made mozzarella sticks, french fries, onion rings and chicken nuggets. Everything was so damned good.

On Tuesday I made fries from potatoes (rather than from a bag) and I deep fried a burrito (which was of course very good).

Wednesday night, Megan, TB, and I went to ShopRite and bought out all of their stock of mozzarella sticks because they were on sale for $1.79. I think we took home seven boxes. Since TB and I checked out separately, we each got one of those printed coupons for $1.50 off our next purchase of mozzarella sticks.

On Thursday night, we went back to the store to see if they had more of the mozzarella sticks. They did, but the sale sign was gone. Megan ran to get a store ad while I loaded up the cart with all eleven boxes that were on the shelf. Sure enough, the sale price was listed in the ad so we went to check out.

Upon checking out, they scanned at full price ($3.59) so the cashier had to call the manager for a price check. After a little confusion, we got our sticks at the sale price, and TB got one free for noticing the pricing error. On top of all that, we both got another printed coupon for $1.50 off our next purchase of mozzarella sticks.

We were really happy with ourselves that evening, so we took pictures.

Tonight we made chicken wings and of course, more mozzarella sticks. The wings came out completely awesome, so they’re going to be a deep fryer mainstay.

We decided that we need to start documenting all of the things we try to fry, as well as keep a queue for future ideas. Next on tap: deep fried candy bars, oreos, cookie dough, and funnel cake.

After a day without, it was nice waking up having electricity again.

We were pretty lucky. We were only hit with the outermost edge of Hurricane Isabel. Here it seemed like any other summer thunderstorm, with maybe a bit more wind. Wind enough to knock down a couple big trees on a couple big power lines of course.

Our power went out a few times on Thursday night, each time only for a few minutes. Then, it went out again around five in the morning on Friday. Luckily, Megan set an alarm for herself on her cell phone, so she work up in time to leave for school, though because of a bunch of road closures, she ended up getting there late.

I used the lack of power as a break from the online job search. I read for most of the day and then took a nap. In the afternoon, with the power still out, I decided to go for a drive. The main road we live on was closed about a mile away from us. I guess that’s probably where our power outage was caused. Driving down the other main road, I found that the East side had power, while the West side did not. This had the effect of making all of the restaurants and stores on the East side of the road especially busy. It was very strange to see every space in the parking lots full, while the mall across the street was completely empty.

Later in the evening, Megan and I went out for another drive. On our way to the grocery store, we saw a truck driving in the opposite direction. Megan asked if the thing on the back of the truck was a generator, and I said “yeah, a really big one.” We bought a lighter and some canned soup and a couple other things at the store and headed back home.

When we got back to our place, we saw some people working under the water tower next to our building. Then we saw the same big generator we had seen on the back of the truck earlier. The fact that they were setting up a generator at the water tower made me assume that we probably wouldn’t have power for a while longer. We made our soup by candle light and then for lack of anything better to do, went to sleep.

This morning, I woke up to the familiar hum of all of our electronics. Based on the blinking alarm clock, the power came back on around 2:30am. The generator under the water tower is still running (damned loudly).

Hopefully we’ll hear from fatty soon.

In some ways I feel bad for leaving the company like this, as they haven’t hired a replacement for me yet, I will not be able to train this new person. In other ways I don’t feel too bad. I did give almost two months notice. In the end, I just needed to get out of there to get on with my life. I can’t wait to get back home.

After work today, my boss took me out for drinks with a couple other people form work. That was pretty cool.

It will be strange not working for the same company any more. I did work there for almost five years. I can’t help but be excited about starting somewhere new, even with the crappy job market.

Anyway, as a result of leaving the company, I have to turn in my laptop and company phone tomorrow. So you probably won’t see me on ICQ for a while, at least until I get started at a new job and have the money for a new laptop. If you need my new phone number, contact me.

We left Cleveland around 2:30 last Monday. Because I hadn’t slept the night before the move, I was really dragging on the drive here. I had to make six stops for coffee, pop, and food. Somewhere along the way I came to the realization that I wasn’t driving away to somewhere, I was actually driving home. Once that sunk in, the rest of the drive was pretty easy. We arrived at our new place around 10:30. TB was waiting for us with the keys (and dinner) but he had to leave shortly after that. By the time I finally went to sleep I had been awake for 40 hours straight. I would not suggest driving the PA turnpike without sleep. I plan to never do that again.

Our movers arrived Tuesday morning and had everything unloaded by about 1:00pm. We got lunch and visited the huge Target across the street.

On Wednesday we got the cable internet activated but then had problems with one of the cable boxes. We started to unpack a lot of stuff but didn’t get vary far. In the evening we took a drive to Widener to see what Megan’s drive to school will be like. After that, we went to our local Borders and then to Super-G, where we got new Bonus Cards. I found it unusual that the store didn’t sell beer. Later in the evening we found that grocery stores don’t sell beer in Delaware. TB said that he remembered finding it unusual that grocery stores did sell beer in Ohio. Oh well. Later that night we searched online for a car for Megan.

On Thursday, TB came back with some more stuff and we drove with him to his mom’s work to swap vehicles. Along the way we took pictures of a few post offices. Megan made calls to auto insurance places and car dealerships while we were out.

On Friday we drove around to a whole bunch of different stores to get some rendom things for the apartment and just to see what is in the area. We went to Genuardi’s and got a Club Card. We’re going to go to all of the different grocery stores a few times before we decide which one we like best. Megan looked around some more online and found a couple cars that she was interested in. She also talked to someone at a dealership that had a car that seemed to fit all of her requirements, so she made an apointment to test drive it on Saturday.

We woke up a little later than we would have liked on Saturday and went to the the car dealership to check out the car. It’s a 1995 Saturn SL2 with 62000 miles. It was in really good shape and seemed to run very well. Megan put a deposit on it and is going to pick it up next Saturday. I’ll have details about the car later.

After we got home we hung out for a little while and then went to a bunch of different stores, looking for random things and just trying to waste some time.

Tomorrow (later today), I’m going to get up, pack some things and drive back to Cleveland with Megan. I’m going to be working at my old job for another few weeks until I find something in the area, and I have my replacement trained. I really wish I didn’t have to go back to Cleveland but it’s all about the money right now. Hopefully a cool job in the Philly area will appear soon.

Anyway, I’m really loving our new place and can’t wait until I’m able to actually stay here full time.
