LAMP for Windows Only

I followed a link on O’Reilly’s ONLamp.com to take a survey about what topics I’d like to see covered on the site. When I clicked on the link, instead of being able to take the survey, I was told that my browser is not supported. Being an Opera user, I’m used to dealing with this kind of ignorance, but I expect better from O’Reilly.

ONLamp.com is supposed to be a resource for developers and users of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP, Python) systems. To limit the survey to Windows users by using Zoomerang’s survey system is obviously short-sighted. Hopefully next time they’ll choose a more tolerant survey system, maybe even one that utilizes LAMP technology.

(I could have changed Opera’s User-Agent string to report as Mozilla or IE but that’s not the point)

O’Reilly On The Cheap

For the past few weeks Micro Center and Half Price Books have had a lot of older O’Reilly books on clearance for $3-$5. Most of them were clearanced because newer editions were just released.

I’ve been buying up the ones that are at least somewhat interesting to me, leaving titles such as Windows 98 Annoyances and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server on the shelf. I’ve picked up TCP/IP Network Administration, Essential System Administration, Using Samba, Learning the Unix Operating System, Mastering Regular Expressions, and The Whole Internet (for some reason the idea of a book titled ‘The Whole Internet’ amuses me greatly).

Looking at my newly-expanded library of O’Reilly titles, I realize that I’ll never have the spare time to learn everything that I’d like to.
