Eating My Words

When we were in high school, Megan used to make popcorn in her microwave by putting regular popping corn in a brown paper bag. I made fun of her for this, calling her method “WT popcorn” or something like that.

Now I find that one of my culinary heroes, Alton Brown, suggests the very same method!

Check out the Plain Brown Popper.

Stapling the bag shut goes against the whole “don’t put metal in the microwave thing.” Any sparks?

According to the episode in which he uses this method, the size and shape of the staples makes them okay to use in the microwave. So nope, no sparks.

I did it tonight. No sparks. The book says, the length of staples is less than the wavelength of the microwave.

If you want sparks, try this. Highly recommended :)

So I’m safe when using metal objects less than about 12cm (by my calculation)?
