I finally finished Neverwinter Nights! Well, actually just the main single-player game. Now I can try other modules or the preview of the first expansion pack. I love this game.
I was a 15th level druid + 3rd level rogue. I tried to go without companion as much as possible (as a druid I had the animal companion ability if I needed some help in a fight).
I’ll probably start the sample CH 1 of the expansion tonight, though it’s going to be tough deciding on a character.
The companions are valuable not only in combat, but they also open up quests that you wouldn’t be able to start otherwise. Each companion has his/her own side quest you can do in each chapter.
I used Tomi long enough in chapter 1 in order to realize that he had a personal side quest. I then hired all of the others and completed their side quests too. I repeated this at the end of every chapter once I had already accumulated the random items that they were seeking.
Congrats! I beat the game a while ago with a 15th lvl paladin and the rogue companion. Much fun, I can’t wait for the expansion

That’s a good way to do it. I had most of the items, but couldn’t advance the quests enough to get to the point where I could deliver them…
Each time I leveled I talked to my companion and got more info on the quests, but he kept putting it off.
You had have a high-enough level character before they would continue the story.
