O’Reilly On The Cheap

Sponsord Links:

For the past few weeks Micro Center and Half Price Books have had a lot of older O’Reilly books on clearance for $3-$5. Most of them were clearanced because newer editions were just released.

I’ve been buying up the ones that are at least somewhat interesting to me, leaving titles such as Windows 98 Annoyances and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server on the shelf. I’ve picked up TCP/IP Network Administration, Essential System Administration, Using Samba, Learning the Unix Operating System, Mastering Regular Expressions, and The Whole Internet (for some reason the idea of a book titled ‘The Whole Internet’ amuses me greatly).

Looking at my newly-expanded library of O’Reilly titles, I realize that I’ll never have the spare time to learn everything that I’d like to.

It’s the Internet, all in one book!

“Learning the UNIX operating system” is pretty good, though the most valuable O’Reilly book to me is still “Essential System Administration.”

I don’t know, The only orreilly books that I think are really good are the Perl books. Running linux is alright but is always out of date. I havent looked at Essential System Administration though.

I picked up Learning the Korn Shell for $3.95 at Micro Center, and let me tell you, it’s a page turner. I haven’t been able to put it down. Not. Looking at my collection, I’d have to agree with Fatty. I have high hopes for Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference, 2nd Edition, but I’ll let you know after I get it Saturday (stupid default buy.com address in Cleveland).

Were you really expecting an enthralling read from Learning the Korn Shell?

On most subjects I think the O’Reilly title is best. I generally look for an O’Reilly book first and then look at the others. I never buy without looking through the book first though. Only rarely do I find another publishers’ title is better than the O’Reilly one. Practical PostgreSQL is a good example of a bad O’Reilly book.

I just got Buliding Secure Servers with Linux and it seems to be a good collection of information that you’d have to find in many different places on the internet.

I wasnt trying to say that any other books were better. I usually go for online stuff because it is more up to date and you can ask questions. In general I dont like books for reference. Books are really best for theory and stuff. (IMAO)
